Geology of Mt. Desert Rock

and Great Duck Island

Spencer Gray III, '17 created the first detailed bedrock geology maps of two islands off the coast of Maine owned by COA. His methods included hiking around both islands with a GPS, using orthography from a dji drone, and analysing data in ArcGIS.

Glacial erosion and pre-existing

fracture networks collaborate to create the

Acadia National Park Landscape

Alba Mar Rodriguez Padilla, '18 and Gemma Venuti, '18 (with Dr. Sarah Hall in photo) studied the relationship between MDI's geomorphology and it's fracture and fault networks. This was done by using Geographic Information Systems to find geomorphic features using LiDAR and other data sets and then ground truthing via fieldwork.

They also presented this work at the Geological Society of Maine meeting on April 1 at UMO.
